100 years after the exile, God’s people are back in the promised land. The temple has been rebuilt. The priests have begun to offer the sacrifices again. But the excitement has worn off, and the high expectations have been dashed. No Messiah has come. No glory revealed. God’s people are discouraged. Their worship is empty ritual – just going through the motions. Their heart is not in it. They do not honor God, and they do not love their neighbor rightly.
God sends the prophet, Malachi (“My Messenger”) to confront his people, and to call them back to the worship that God deserves and demands!
